“Nocturnal Visions” is a video installation documenting an often invisible wildlife ecosystem captured using night vision cameras that have been setup in various locations across the urban fabric of Riyadh.
These low light portraits of often illusive nocturnal wildlife, aims to illuminate the vanishing of natural space within the narrative of our urban city life. But more importantly casts a questioning light on our own neglect of the natural in our rapid human development. Light pollution from our urban spaces blinds us to the crucial role of nature and its systematic vanishing from our cities.
Rendering “the natural” as a lost memory, a ghost like image of what nature truly once was. In Nocturnal Visions the artist offers a window to a rapidly departing state of the natural and its obscuring as a result of our concrete redefinition of home. The natural thus becomes an apparition, a fleeting vision almost too supernatural to be perceived in our minds eye. In Nocturnal Visions, the installation sheds light on our dim perception of life, utilizing night vision cameras capturing al l forms of unexpected wildlife found across the city of Riyadh and the traces they leave behind.
The work is an illumination of what is missing in our lives through the enhancing of low light. It is a documentation of our human state through the capture of the non-human hiding in the shadows of our urban space. There is a lot to learn from the resilience and the instincts of nature, though it has been obscured by our presence. They continue to nest, they den, they huddle and hunt in the un-zoned wastelands of our urban planning.
The work transports viewers to a remote conceptual landscape, located within the walls of our urban jungle, It brings to light this fragile line between the natural and the human made, the wild and our domesticated lives. Within the darkness of the night, there is knowledge and brightness waiting for us to perceive.
