Who walks where I am not,
who remains standing when I die (Foundations)
installation
metal, concrete
2022
This artwork serves as a memorial and a repository of my knowledge, metaphorically placed upside down in the earth. These unearthed foundations, fragile sculptures, and delicate columns are intentionally set underground, symbolizing a way of burying my death. The least obtrusive of reminders, this memorial disturbs no one, ensuring that as long as my monument remains beneath the surface, my life persists above.
As viewers walk between these fragile foundations, they engage in a physical interaction that heightens the sense of instability and delicacy. The sculptures and columns, with their intricate and precarious forms, create a labyrinthine path that invites careful navigation. Each step taken among these delicate structures emphasizes their vulnerability, underscoring the impossibility of building upon them.
The unearthed foundations reveal themselves for what they are fragile objects, remnants of a past that can no longer support new growth. This interaction between the viewer and the sculptures enhances the theme of transience and the ephemeral nature of existence, prompting contemplation of life, death, and the fragile balance that sustains us.
